This very picturesque, immaculately-conditioned, tree-lined course is a pleasure to play and, as one Randparkmember observed, even if you’re not on your game it is a very pleasant walk! It is shorter than neighbouring Firethorn but because of the abundance of trees lining the fairways there are some tight holes as well as some extremely challenging ones. There is a wide variety of holes and no two holes are remotely alike.
Retief Goosenwon the 1995 South African Open here when the course was still known as Randparkand “The Goose” was very impressed with the layout, as was Sweden’s Mathias Gronbergwho won the 2000 edition of the SA Open here when it was sponsored by Mercedes Benz. However since the revamp the layout is much-improved and would be a wonderful venue for future SA Opens or JoburgOpens. Superbly conditioned, it is longer and a little more difficult than Bushwillow with a great finish as 16, 17 and 18 are extremely demanding holes –all three potential card-wreckers.
Regularly ranked as one of the best golf courses in South Africa, and recently ranked by Golf Digest USA in the top 100 courses in the world, the Gary Player Golf course is arguably the most famous course in South Africa. The Gary Player Country Club is acknowledged as a difficult and demanding course and home to Nedbank Million Golf Challenge since 1981. The course requires stamina and accuracy from players and although this parkland course is fairly flat, the many water hazards, cunning sited bunkers and hidden pin placements make up for the lack of gradient. This course also cuts through the African bush leaving the fairways with only the bushveldas a border.
The Lost City Golf club is situated just over the hill from the Gary Player Country Club and although both courses have similar characteristics, the Lost City Golf Club has a different layout. The course was carved out of an undulating rocky terrain and has a classical African feel. Even the clubhouse, which blends in perfectly, has been modelled on the Zimbabwe ruins, an ancient mystical city in the heart of Africa. The course offers a unique experience withspectacular views across the bushveldbeing contrasted by rolling kikuyu fairways and a fine tapestry of waste bunkers, water hazards and mountainous terraces.
